Turmeric for male fertility: Does it help with erectile dysfunction?

turmeric for male fertility

The benefits of turmeric for male fertility are attributed to its antioxidant properties which can help improve sperm quality and erectile function in males by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.

Oxidative stress and inflammation can damage the blood vessels in the penis, making it difficult to get and keep an erection and likewise, damage sperm cells making them less likely to fertilize an egg.

Turmeric is not only beneficial for males but also for females, it also reduces menstrual cramps and improves ovulation, which is why some women often drink turmeric tea during their period to help suit pain.

Turmeric is a spice that has been used in traditional Indian medicine for centuries. It has many health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Some studies have also shown that turmeric may improve male fertility.

Benefits of Turmeric for male Fertility

One study found that turmeric supplementation increased sperm count and motility in men with infertility.

Promotes spermatogenesis

Incorporating turmeric into our diets can promote spermatogenesis by reducing apoptosis in the testes. Apoptosis is a process of programmed cell death [1].

According to a supporting study, it was found that curcumin supplementation reduced apoptosis in the testes of mice fed with a low-carbohydrate diet [2]. Curcumin is found largely in turmeric and can be activated by piperine in black pepper when combined. The study suggests that dietary intake of turmeric may help to protect sperm cells from death and improve spermatogenesis.

Improves sperm quality

Turmeric may also improve sperm quality by reducing oxidative stress which can damage sperm, making them less likely to fertilize an egg [3, 4].

Curcumin, an active compound in turmeric was found to be protective against oxidative damage and sperm DNA alterations, a publication on reproductive sciences revealed [5]. This means incorporating turmeric into our diets can be a cost-effective yet efficient way to counter the deleterious effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Improves testosterone level

An investigative study on hypertensive rats suggests that ginger or turmeric or combining the supplements of both rhizomes can prevent male reproductive dysfunction by improving total testosterone and reducing the impact of oxidative stress [6].

Testosterone is a hormone that is important for male fertility, as well as erectile functions. As you can see, you can even make your ginger and turmeric tea by steeping small grated ginger and turmeric in hot water for 10 minutes, straining, and adding honey and lemon to taste.

For a single teacup, you can use 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger and 1/4 teaspoon of ground turmeric. If you are using fresh ginger and turmeric, use about 1/2 inch of each, peeled and grated.

Intake of this may help men with low testosterone levels as the study found that dietary supplementation of ginger or turmeric can improve testosterone levels [5].

May improve erectile functions

Does turmeric help with erectile dysfunction? Yes, dietary intake of turmeric may also improve reproductive function which includes erectile functions by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation which could damage the blood vessels in the penis, making it difficult to get and keep an erection.

There is no direct link between turmeric and improved erectile function, however, a study found that turmeric can improve testosterone levels in men [7], which is a hormone that is important for male fertility and when combined with ginger can improve sexual function as ginger support blood flow to the penis.

Additionally, cavernous nerve injury (CNI) is a common cause of male erectile dysfunction (ED). Curcumin is a natural compound in turmeric with anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties.

Recently, Researchers developed a curved slow-release membrane made of polylactic acid-glycolic acid-polyethylene glycol (PLGA-PEG) and loaded it with curcumin.

They then implanted the membrane into the site of CNI in rats. The results showed that the curcumin slow-release membrane was effective in promoting cavernous nerve regeneration and improving erectile function in the rats.

The membrane also reduced the degree of penile tissue fibrosis. This study suggests that a curcumin slow-release membrane may be a new and effective treatment for male ED caused by CNI.
