This also shows that the ethyl acetate fraction contained higher contents of phenolics and flavonoids than other fractions which made it a potential candidate for Alzheimer’s treatment, as well as to combat free radicals [5].

However, there is a need for an in vivo study on this, to determine the actual effect and mechanism of action on real-life animals.

However it was not clear which particular plant among the two used is more effective, secondly, human-based study is required to understand their effects on humans.

The aqueous extract exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity against S. epidermidis, while the methanolic extract was most effective against S. aureus. The GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of various bioactive compounds that could contribute to the antibacterial activity [17].

Bael leaves and fertility

Studies have shown that bael leaf extract has an antifertility property which may affect spermatogenesis.

A study on a rat model that was fed bael leaf extract at doses of 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg in an experiment. The results showed a significant decrease in sperm count in rats. The concentration of sperm in the epididymis and sexual behavior was altered [18].

Another animal study reported that intake of 300 mg/kg dose of bael leave extract daily for 60 days significantly impaired spermatogenesis, and caused a drop in sperm motility and concentration [19]. However, there was a complete restoration of sperm quality and sperm generation process after 120 days of withdrawing from taking the extract.

Also, one animal study that experimented with a methanolic extract from the bark of a bael tree at the dose of 200, 400, and 600 mg/Kg per body weight for 60 days, reported a reduction in sperm density, motility, viability, and sperm acrosomal integrity without interfering libido and vital organ [20]
