Benefits of Raspberry and Chasteberry for fertility

Raspberry and Chasteberry are two herbs that have been traditionally used for their potential fertility benefits. Here are some of how they may help;

  • Provides nutrients that support reproductive health.
  • Facilitate delivery.
  • Balances reproductive hormones.
  • Regulates menstruation.
  • Boosts ovulation.
  • Boost chances of getting pregnant.

The combination of these herbs has been proven supportive of female fertility in most cases as several studies have suggested [2]. Here’s how they work:

1. Provides nutrients that support reproductive health.

Raspberry leaf is rich in vitamins and minerals that are important for reproductive health, including vitamins C and E, calcium, and iron [3]. Chasteberry contains flavonoids and essential oils that also lower inflammation and support reproductive health [4].

Both are rich in antioxidants which support helps in boosting the immune system’s response and fight against oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is harmful to fertility, with antioxidants its impact on health will be reduced.

2. Facilitate delivery

Raspberry is a rich source of Iron minerals which promotes blood circulation especially towards the uterus, when this happens it will strengthen the uterine muscle fibers and prepare them for delivery [5].

Raspberry leaf is known for its ability to tone the uterus, this can help to reduce the length of labor and decrease the need for interventions during childbirth [6].

Although, a few cases of raspberry interventions during childbirth were mentioned in some studies, however, experts suggest that more in-depth study is required to fully understand its safety.

3. Balances reproductive hormones

Chasteberry contains compounds that can help enables the pituitary to produce luteinizing hormone which signals the ovaries to produce more progesterone.

Furthermore, Chasteberry is already known for its ability to balance reproductive hormones, particularly by increasing levels of progesterone. This can help to regulate the menstrual cycle and reduce symptoms of PMS [7].

Interestingly, raspberry on the other hand may equally help in reducing nausea and vomiting in the first trimester [8]. When these two are combined in tea, it may help balance reproductive hormones which favor fertility.

Finally, both Raspberry and Chasteberry have a hormone-balancing effect, which can also help to boost ovulation. This can be particularly helpful for women who are trying to conceive.

4. Regulates menstruation

Both Raspberry and Chasteberry can help to regulate the menstrual cycle by balancing hormones and reducing inflammation. This can help to reduce symptoms such as cramping, bloating, mood swings, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) [9].

Furthermore, a study suggests that chasteberry may help with relaxation, and sleep quality [10], this can help curb stress (Stress is a known factor that is detrimental to female fertility and can also affects the menstrual cycle ).

Just as noted in the case study, when 23 women in menopause were given Chasteberry oils, a restoration menstruation cycle and improved mood, reduction of hot flashes, were noticed [11].

Although, several studies have noted the benefits of Chasteberry, remember that in most of these cases reported, the herb was combined with other powerful herbs to become more effective. It can be fully, stated that these benefits can not be achieved with Chasteberry alone.

5. Prevents hyperprolactinemia

Hyperprolactinemia is a condition where the prolactin levels in the blood are high [12]. When prolactin levels are high, it impedes the proper secretion of pituitary hormones responsible for gonadal function, this could undermine the function of the gonads and could lead to infertility [13].

Interestingly, a study where 40 women with high levels of prolactin were given either 40 mg of Chasteberry (Vitex agnus-castus) or a pharmaceutical drug. It was shown that Chasteberry was as effective in balancing prolactin levels, just like other pharmaceutical drugs did [14, 15].

Similarly, a related study conducted with 52 women who have luteal phase defect, noticed lowered prolactin levels and prolonged menstrual phases after 20mg of chasteberry supplement were taken [17].
